NWLA continues its Language of Food Series with a demonstration class and dinner featuring the marvelous food of Eastern Europe. Just in time to celebrate Orthodox Easter, the menu will include roast lamb, hand-made fillo dough creations, Ruska salata, and other fabulous traditional dishes made in the old ways using fresh, seasonal and local ingredients.
The presentation is co-sponsored by Slow Food, Whidbey Chapter. Proceeds from the event will go to NWLA's scholarship fund for children's summer language camp.
The Language of Food Series explores traditional cuisines from around the world, and the ways in which these cuisines maintain unbroken relationships with the healthier traditions of the past. By examining these customs, we can reconnect with the know-how of our grandparents and great-grandparents, and their simpler LANGUAGE OF FOOD. In keeping with this message we incorporate the philosophy of the Slow Food movement, which envisions a world in which all people can eat food that is good for them, good for the people who grow it and good for the planet.
The cost for the event is only $58 and includes the class and dinner. Seating is limited so reserve early by contacting NWLA at 360.321.2101 or by contacting us

NWLA is delighted to once again host this amazing choral group from Boston. Last time they visited was 2005, and we packed the house at WICA. Libana is a global music ensemble that illuminates the creativity, vision and spirit of the world's women through the performance of traditional and contemporary music and dance. Hailed as "Troubadours of Peace", the group raises awareness and appreciation for diverse cultural expressions and the universal themes that unite us all. Libana inspires intercultural understanding, healing and peacebuilding.
Their repertoire of ancient melodies and contemporary tunes is performed a cappella and with a vast array of instruments, including guitar, dumbek, accordion, oud, naqqara, clarinet and double bass. Their music is drawn from the divergent cultural expressions of the Mediterranean, Balkans, Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.
